Community-Driven Development at Chaglakuri Village
Anita described the collaborative effort in the village of Chaglakuri, stating, “We had planned and got the plan approved by everyone in the village as well as in the Gram Sabha. And within just six months of the approval, a 50-metre drainage channel was constructed from the primary school of Chaglakuri village to Lubin Kisku’s land.”
The issue began when rainwater accumulated on the road in front of the primary school, obstructing transport for villagers and students and causing water to stagnate. This stagnant water became a breeding ground for mosquitoes, flies, and other insects, creating an unpleasant odour that detrimentally affected the school environment. Recognising these challenges, Anita organised a gathering of villagers in the Majhithan (Worship) field. During this meeting, various rural problems were discussed, and the accumulation of rainwater in front of the school became a focal point of concern.
In response to this pressing issue, the community worked together to develop a comprehensive plan. This plan went through the necessary approvals in the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP) and was ratified during the village assembly, ensuring that all voices were heard and considered. Within a remarkable six months, the local Panchayat began construction of the new drainage canal, fundamentally transforming the area. This canal not only alleviated flooding but also significantly improved transport access for both students and villagers.
Moreover, the involvement of the villagers did not stop with the construction. Through the Community Support and Resource Assistance (CSRA) Project Staff, villagers were equipped with essential skills. They learned how to identify and address the problems facing their village and the steps needed to get their plans approved within the village council. This knowledge not only empowered individuals but also fostered a strong sense of unity among the residents. They realised that collective action could lead to tangible improvements, showcasing the potential for community-led development.
As a consequence of their efforts, villagers recognised a shift in their capacity for leadership and engagement. They understood that the success of this project was a testament to their collaborative spirit. This realisation reinforced the notion, “This is our Panchayat; our plan is implemented by us.” Through their commitment and teamwork, they witnessed their ideas transform into reality, ultimately enhancing life in Chaglakuri village.
